- American black bears have a sense of smell 100 times better than humans. It is better than that of other animals of similar size.
- The American black bear is capable of making conclusions on a basic conceptual level, and is therefore considered one of the most intelligent mammals.
- A characteristic distinguishing feature of the American black bear's coloring is the light-yellow tip of the muzzle.
- The American black bear can run uphill, downhill, or on a horizontal surface at a speed of up to 55 km/h.
- American black bear cubs are born in winter weighing 200–450 g and by spring weigh 2–5 kg. They find their way to their mother's milk on their own.
- Fat American black bears in their winter coat quickly overheat and get tired because their thick layer of fat interferes with effective body temperature regulation.
- The American black bear can eat as much food as its stomach can hold, then immediately go to sleep. Upon waking, it goes back to foraging again, despite the fact that its diet consists of 80–95% plant matter.
- Adult male American black bears travel 12–24 km in a day, which is 2–3 times more than yearlings (1.6–3.2 km) and adult females (3.2–9 km).
- One American black bear swam across a freshwater sound over a distance of more than 14.4 km.
- Mother American black bears with cubs need large trees with rough bark, such as that of white pines, because these trees are the safest for cubs when climbing.
- Hibernates in winter but can wake up.
العمر
American black bears typically live from 10 to 30 years, with a maximum lifespan of 34 years and a theoretical lifespan ranging from 17 years to 34 years; the age of sexual maturity varies from 3 to 7 years. The embryo develops inside the mother, and after mating, development pauses for several months. A cub is born blind and nearly hairless, living in a den and feeding on its mother’s milk. Following birth, the young's eyes open between 4 weeks and 1 month 2 weeks. The stage of "young after weaning" lasts from 8 months to 4 years, during which the animal learns to find food, climb trees, and avoid adult males. An adult black bear is capable of reproduction and independent foraging, with this stage lasting from 4 years to 30 years and 2 months; males are noticeably larger and heavier than females.
نمط ظاهري
The black bear receives nourishment from the mother via the placenta during pregnancy, and by the time of birth, the embryo weighs approximately 250 grams. The cub’s fur grows quickly and becomes thick to protect against the cold, and the eyes open roughly one month after birth. Sharp claws on young bears help them climb trees well. Adult bears have dense fur that protects from the cold in winter and helps endure heat in summer; the main color is black, but brown and reddish individuals are also found. Strong and sharp claws are present on the fore and hind paws, used for climbing trees, digging, and obtaining food. The color of the muzzle allows for good sense of smell, and the nose helps find food at a distance of several kilometers. Strong teeth allow eating both plant and animal food, and canines help in hunting.
علم وظائف الأعضاء
American black bears range in body height from 1.5 to 3.5 meters and in body length from 1.4 to 2.1 meters; their mass varies from 103.02 to 103.57 kilograms. The embryonic stage involves a body mass from 0 to 0.2 grams, while the cub stage sees a body mass from 0.2 to 12 grams and a body length from 20 to 70 centimeters. The young after transformation have a body mass from 12 to 60 grams and a body length from 70 centimeters to 1.4 meters. Adult individuals weigh from 41 to 160 kilograms and measure 1.4 to 1.8 meters in length.
الموطن
American black bears inhabit moderate mixed forests with warm summers and many oak, birch, and maple trees, moderate coniferous forests that are cool with many coniferous trees and snow in winter, flooded meadows where water frequently covers the ground and there is abundant grass, taiga with cold winters and many coniferous trees such as spruce and pine, and tropical rainforests that are always hot and humid with large trees and vines. The species also lives in highlands and tundra, terrestrial forests, terrestrial meadows and steppes, and shrublands. American black bears can be found at elevations up to 3.5 kilometers. They thrive in climates with cool summers averaging +15…+20 °C, summers with almost no rain but more precipitation in winter, very hot summers exceeding +25…+30 °C, consistently wet conditions with frequent rains and high humidity, or rainy and cool summers with snow in winter.
مأوى
American black bears reside under tree roots, in caves, or within dense thickets, utilizing dens for hibernation, reproduction, rest, and protection from cold weather; these dens are constructed from branches, berries, and grass.
الجغرافيا
The American black bear occupies the Nearctic biogeographical realm and is found in several forest ecosystems, including forests of the central and southern Cascade Range, coniferous forests of the northern Rocky Mountains, forests of the eastern Cascades, forests of New England and Acadia, Sierra Nevada forests, and the transition zone between the eastern Canadian forests and the boreal zone.
التغذية
The black bear is an omnivore, and its diet changes depending on the time of year: in summer and autumn it eats berries, nuts, grass and insects, and can also catch fish, small animals and eat carrion, actively gaining fat before winter. The species forages on land, climbs trees for fruits and honey, and catches fish in rivers, using strategies of active hunting, ambush, searching and foraging, as well as pursuit. The diet includes berries, nuts, grass, insects, fish, small mammals, carrion, honey, fish and nectar, with a daily food requirement ranging from 1.5 kg to 11 kg. Black bear cubs feed on milk, while adult individuals hunt reindeer, beavers, hares, red deer, arctomys, Far Eastern salmon and elk. It should be noted that in some cultures the species is consumed as food, but does not meet halal and kosher requirements.
تكاثر
The black bear lives and develops on land, outside of water bodies; reproduction occurs through ordinary sexual means with fertilization, without changing generations, and mating between males and females happens in summer. Embryo development lasts 2 months 1 week; cubs are born alive in winter within a den, forming groups ranging from 1 to 5 individuals. The mother exhibits parental care for her offspring, feeds and protects the bear cubs until one and a half to two years of age, and the nest can be located directly on the ground surface, inside a tree trunk, or in a cave or crevice. Eggs or cubs develop in a terrestrial nest located on the ground or close to it. Females reach maturity from 3 to 6 years, and the reproductive interval is from 2 to 4 years.
