Cryptoprocta ferox
- Fossas can kill birds with the odor of their anal glands. Among Malagasy myths, it is claimed that they can kill birds with only the unpleasant smell of their anal glands.
- The fossa is the largest carnivorous mammal in Madagascar. Its prehistoric relative reached a mass of 17–20 kg.
- Fossas are semi-arboreal animals, able to jump from branch to branch, but prefer to cross distances longer than 50 m on the ground. They climb trees using their paws and tail.
- Fossa young can jump from branch to branch at 3.5 months. At 2 months old, they already climb branches.
- The fossa’s voice resembles a cat’s: they can produce a threatening growl that turns into a drawn-out “meow.” Young fossas purr.
- The fossa kills prey by holding it with its front paws and biting the back of the head, and sometimes kills more animals than it can eat. It often attacks lemurs, chasing them through trees.
- The fossa is the only Madagascar carnivore that spends part of its life on open spaces. Fossa dens are located in forests, but they venture into savannas in search of food.
- It can descend trees head-first thanks to rotating ankles.
- Fossas are usually solitary, but during the mating season (September–October), 3–4 males gather around a female. During the mating season, males lose caution and engage in fights, trying to bite each other.
- Adolescent females temporarily “masculinise” — they grow a penis-like structure.
Yaş
Fossas typically live for fifteen to twenty years, with a maximum lifespan of twenty-three years and one month, and a theoretical lifespan ranging from eleven years and seven months to twenty-three years and one month. The species reaches sexual maturity at four to four years and two months of age. The embryo develops inside the mother’s body, followed by the infant stage, where the young are born blind and helpless, live in a shelter with their mother, and feed on milk. An adult fossa is a fully grown animal that hunts independently and can reproduce, and this stage lasts from two to twenty years.
Fenotip
The young fossa has short and soft fur, and its eyes are closed at birth, opening approximately two weeks later. The species possesses a flexible and muscular body that assists in climbing trees and running quickly. Sharp claws help the animal grip bark and seize prey, while a long and strong tail is necessary for balance on branches. The adult fossas have sharp teeth that allow them to tear meat from their prey.
Fiziologiya
The fossa has a body length ranging from 1.35 to 1.65 meters; the adult stage exhibits a body length between 1.35 and 1.55 meters. The species' mass varies from 0.7 to 0.85 kilograms, while the adult’s mass ranges from 5 to 7.5 kilograms. Young fossas have a body mass ranging from 80 grams to 2.5 kilograms, and their body length is between 15 and 60 centimeters.
Yaşayış mühiti
Fossas inhabit land, forests, and scrubland environments, with elevations up to 2 kilometers above sea level. The species occupies tropical dry forests characterized by heat and a dry season, where trees lose their leaves; deserts and dry shrubs that are very hot and dry with infrequent rainfall and cacti; tropical savannas with uneven rainfall, abundant grass, and trees; and tropical moist forests that are consistently hot and humid with large trees and vines. Climates vary, including those with little precipitation in winter and more in summer, consistently hot conditions with limited winter rainfall and frequent summer rains, perpetually hot and humid conditions with near-daily rainfall, consistently hot conditions with frequent but sometimes scarce rainfall, and climates that are always very wet with almost constant rainfall and high humidity.
Sığınacaq
Fossas live in forests, both in trees and on the ground, utilizing dens for protection, reproduction, and rest.
Coğrafiya
Fossas are found within the Afrotropical realm, specifically inhabiting the succulent woodland ecosystems of Madagascar. The species occupies succulent forests, and they are endemic to this island nation.
Qida
The fossa eats meat from other animals, including lemurs, birds, reptiles, and small mammals, both on the ground and in trees; it hunts using ambush tactics and active hunting strategies. The species’ diet consists of propithecus, common brown lemurs, hapalemurs, mouse lemurs, Lepilemuridae, rats, large mammals, and reptiles. It obtains food through ambush predation. The daily food requirement ranges from 200 grams to 400 grams. Young fossas feed on milk.
Çoxalma
Embryonic development takes 3 months. Litter size is 2–4. Maturity occurs from 2 to 4 years. Offspring are 2–4; the female gives birth once a year. The young are born live and spend the first months in shelter under the mother's protection. The reproductive interval is 1 year. They inhabit and develop on land, outside of water bodies. Eggs, or young develop in a nest built on the ground or close to it. The nest is hidden in an underground burrow. A caring mother—the nest is hidden in an underground burrow, only the mother shows parental care for the offspring. Live birth—the young are born live on land, they do not hatch from eggs or larvae. Ordinary sexual—homogamy, reproduction always with fertilization, without a change of generations.
