Majorero
Canarian camel (Camello canario)
Calm, hardy, adaptive to arid conditions. Less aggressive compared to the average dromedary, gets along well in small herds. Strong instinct for energy conservation, resistant to heat and poor nutrition.
Canarian camel (Camello Canario / Majorero) — compact, strong and dry breeding line of the one-humped camel (dromedary), developed for the volcanic landscapes of the Canary Islands. Differs from the base species by a more square body conformation, lower height at the withers (185–210 cm), short powerful neck (90–115 cm), hump noticeably shifted backward, drier and more compact head (length 380–440 mm), small erect ears (95–115 mm), dense “mane” on the neck and shoulders, longer and denser coat on the neck, hump, shoulders and thighs (up to 120–180 mm). Format index 1.45–1.52, massiveness index 115–125. Body length 260–310 cm, chest girth 210–245 cm. Hump small (height 350–550 mm), rounded-oval. Limbs strong and short, foot pad 170–195 mm. Tail short (450–650 mm) with long black tassel (up to 180 mm). Acceptable colors: light beige to golden-sandy (rubio majorero — most valuable), reddish-brown (colorado), chocolate-brown to black (negro/prieto), bicolor (light body + dark neck, hump, limbs). Disqualifying faults: hump too far forward, very long thin neck, white markings (except a spot on the forehead), weak limbs, absence of mane, height below 180 cm in males.
nipping grass and leaves
trophic:herbivore
Sheds in spring. Thick fur falls out in large clumps to make it easier in the heat.
