greater koa finch
Rhodacanthis palmeri
The orange-breasted finch flowerpecker is an extinct bird from the Hawaiian Islands. Males had a bright orange head and breast, a sturdy beak for koa seeds, while females were colored in more modest tones.
The species was distinguished by an unusually thick beak among the flower finches. It played an important role in dispersing koa seeds in Hawaiian forests until its extinction due to habitat loss.
