Bikaneri camel
Calm, hardy, obedient, less aggressive compared to other Indian breeds. Well adapted to the desert conditions of Rajasthan, shows a strong instinct to conserve energy in heat.
Bikaneri — one of the largest and most massive breeds of dromedaries of the Indian subcontinent. Build powerful, broad, with well-developed musculature, strong bone structure and pronounced “barrel-shaped” body. Height at withers: males 1980–2150 mm, females 1850–1980 mm. Body length 2400–2800 mm. Live weight: males 650000–850000 g (up to 950000 g), females 550000–720000 g. Head relatively large, wide in the frontal part, with a rhomboid profile, short and blunt muzzle. Ears small (90–110 mm), erect, triangular. Eyes large, dark brown. Neck powerful, thick (900–1100 mm), with a muscular crest in males. Hump one, large, wide, rounded-dome-shaped, height 450–650 mm. Chest very wide (girth 2100–2400 mm). Limbs strong, medium length. Tail short (450–600 mm), with a “tassel” at the end. Coat dense, short on the body (10–25 mm), longer on the neck, shoulders and hump (40–60 mm). Traditional color dark brown to almost black (“kala”/“siyah”); dark brown with tan, brown-gray (“bhura”), rarely light brown (“sund”) are allowed. Differs from the basic dromedary by more massive build, short broad head, powerful neck, wide chest and massive hump located closer to the front of the back. Massiveness index > 110. Not allowed: narrow chest, “deer” neck, pointed hump, long narrow muzzle, high-leggedness, light colors.
