yarrell's blenny
Chirolophis ascanii
Yarrell's blenny, or Chirolophis ascanii, is a small marine fish with a long body and skin growths on the head. It lives on a rocky bottom in the cold waters of the northern Atlantic.
Yarrell's blenny differs from related species with its lush branched growths on the head and the fact that the male guards the eggs. It is important for nature because it eats small invertebrates and serves as food for cod and other large fish.
