The Sicilian swamp turtle is a freshwater species that lives only on the island of Sicily. It spends most of its life in the water of ponds, lakes, and slow rivers, but comes out on land for basking and laying eggs.
The Sicilian marsh turtle differs from the European marsh turtle in head shape, coloration, and genetics. It is important for Sicilian nature because it controls insect populations and serves as food for predators.
