Calm, hardy, less timid compared to other yak lines. Well adapted to long treks in the highlands, shows a strong herd instinct, moderately aggressive to strangers only during calf protection period.
Haapa (western yak) — one of the largest and most massive breeding lines of the domestic yak. Height at withers: bulls 1380–1550 mm, cows 1180–1320 mm. Live weight: bulls 650–950 kg (average 780–820 kg), cows 380–520 kg (average 420–450 kg). Body length: bulls 2100–2600 mm, cows 1800–2150 mm. Build powerful, coarse, barrel-shaped deep body, strongly developed forequarters, pronounced meat type. Head large, broad with massive forehead (length 410–560 mm). Horns long, massive, widely spaced, thick at the base, less curved. Ears small, triangular (length 110–145 mm). Eyes small, deeply set, dark brown. Nose broad, covered with hair, nostrils wide (45–60 mm). Vibrissae long, stiff (up to 110 mm). Neck short, powerful with long dewlap in bulls (450–650 mm). Limbs short, strong, hooves large, black (diameter 110–135 mm). Tail short (280–360 mm without brush), brush very long and dense (650–850 mm). Coat double: long guard hair (250–550 mm) forms a “mantle” and “skirt” reaching the ground. Dominant color — solid deep black, white “socks” on hind legs and a white star on the forehead are allowed, rarely dark brown. Distinguished from other lines by larger size, massive horns, long dense coat with skirt, short tail shaft and pronounced meat type.
