sooty storm petrel
Oceanodroma tristrami
The dark storm petrel is a small seabird that spends almost its entire life flying over the waters of the Pacific Ocean. It comes to land only to lay an egg and raise a chick in a burrow.
The dark storm petrel differs from other storm petrels by its very dark coloration of the entire body and choice of nesting sites on specific islands in the northern part of the Pacific Ocean. It is important for nature because it transfers nutrients from the ocean to the islands and serves as part of the food chain for marine predators.
