The slender-billed dunlin is a small coastal bird 14–17 cm long. Adult birds have a bright red cap on the head, light body with dark markings on the chest and wings.
The thin-legged dunlin differs from other dunlins in its bright red cap and lack of a hind toe on the foot. It helps keep the shores clean by eating insects and serves as prey for birds of prey.
