The East African black mud turtle is a small freshwater turtle with a dark shell. It lives in swamps, rivers, and temporary water bodies in East Africa and can burrow into the mud when the water dries up.
This turtle differs from related species by its almost completely black shell and head without yellow or orange spots. It is important for nature because it eats animal remains, cleans the water, and serves as food for birds and crocodiles.
