Moroccan donkey (الحمار المغربي / حمار الأطلس / الحمار البربري) — a strong, compact, relatively short-legged breed, one of the largest and most powerful North African donkeys. Height at withers 1100–1350 mm (males 1180–1350 mm, females 1100–1250 mm), body length 1400–1700 mm, live weight 280000–420000 g. Build strong, skeleton massive, musculature well developed. Head large, broad in the frontal part, muzzle relatively short and wide, forehead convex. Ears 190–260 mm, erect, wide at the base. Eyes large, dark brown or almost black. Nose straight or slightly convex. Neck short, very muscular. Body deep and wide, back short straight or slightly concave, chest wide and deep (girth 1400–1650 mm). Limbs strong, short, hooves wide almost round. Tail short, low set. Coat short, dense, coarse. Dominant color gray of various shades (from light ashy to dark mousy), with a mandatory dark stripe along the spine, dark cross on the shoulders, dark stockings on the legs and a light mirror around the eyes and on the muzzle. Format index 1.20–1.28. Differs from the basic species by larger size, massive skeleton, short broad head, powerful neck and strong limbs adapted to mountainous terrain.
