Calm, schooling, cautious. High food motivation, actively feeds on the bottom and in the water column. Gets along well with other peaceful fish of similar size. In ponds shows timidity, quickly gets used to the feeding place.
Cyprinus carpio — large freshwater fish with a high, moderately laterally compressed body. Adults have a length of 350–1100 mm (record up to 1500 mm), weight 1500–9000 g (more often 2500–6000 g at a length of 450–750 mm). The body is high, the back is strongly arched, the belly is rounded. The head is relatively small, triangular (22–27% of body length). The mouth is inferior, protrusible, with two pairs of barbels. Differs from the parental Cyprinus rubrofuscus by a higher “humpbacked” body, a larger and higher back, lighter golden-bronze coloration of the sides, larger scales and more pronounced serration of the spiny fin rays. Proportions (ideal): body length / body height = 2.6–2.9 : 1, body height 38–45% of body length, head length 23–26%. Breeding forms: scaled, mirror, leather (naked), linear; ornamental koi are not included in the wild standard.
Immature form that undergoes metamorphosis before adulthood.
