Homing Pigeon
High orientation to returning home, strong homing instinct, calm and hardy in flight, social in flock, moderate aggression towards strangers, high motivation for long flights.
A breeding line of the domestic pigeon specialized in orientation and long-distance high-speed flight. Medium size, athletic lean build, streamlined body, powerful chest, long straight back. Weight 300–480 g (ideally 340–420 g), body length 340–390 mm, wingspan 620–710 mm. Small lean head, large eyes with orange-red or yellow-orange iris, beak 18–23 mm. Wings long (210–245 mm), held tightly against the body, tail 90–115 mm with 12 feathers. Legs short and strong (tarsus 28–36 mm). Plumage dense, stiff and glossy. Permitted colors: blue with black bars, silver, black, red, pied, white. Differs from the wild rock pigeon by longer narrow wings, deep muscular chest, long straight back, well-developed pectoral musculature (18–22% of body mass), dense stiff plumage. Ideal proportions: body length to wing ratio 1:0.62–0.65, chest depth 35–38% of body length, head 1/7–1/8 of body length. Disqualifying traits: crest, feathered tarsi, humped back, malformed chest, excessive weight.
