harlequin poison frog
Oophaga histrionica
324
The elegant tree frog is a small brightly colored frog from the tropical forests of Colombia. The animal's skin contains strong poison, and females show parental care by feeding tadpoles with special eggs.
The elegant tree frog differs from related species with very variable bright coloration and a special way of feeding tadpoles with the mother's eggs. It helps control insect populations in the forest and serves as an example of bright warning coloration in nature.
