Gray Nightjar
Caprimulgus jotaka
The Japanese nightjar is a nocturnal bird with gray-brown plumage that allows it to camouflage perfectly during the day on the ground or on branches. At night, it flies with its wide mouth open and catches flying insects.
The Japanese nightjar differs from related species by its more grayish plumage tone and a characteristic voice resembling a knock. It plays an important role in forest ecosystems by reducing the number of nocturnal insects.
