Calm, balanced, less aggressive and noisy compared to other breeds of domestic geese. Gets along well with other animals and people. Retains a strong brooding and maternal instinct. Less territorial than many gray goose lines.
Bavarian land goose — medium-sized, strongly built, proportional breed of domestic geese based on the gray goose. Weight of ganders 5500–7000 g (ideal 6000–6500 g), geese 4500–6000 g (ideal 5000–5500 g). Body length 850–1050 mm, chest girth 520–580 mm. Build strong, somewhat squat, with a broad chest, horizontal or slightly raised body position (10–20°). Differs from the wild gray goose in smaller size, shorter strong beak, compact build, bright orange color of the beak and legs, pronounced scaly feather pattern and lighter belly. The only permissible color is gray (Graue) with a scaly pattern (light border on feathers), dark gray head and top of the neck, light gray chest with a silvery coating, light gray to white belly and undertail, gray-blue mirror on the wings. Up to 5–7% white feathers on the chest/abdomen are allowed. Disqualifying defects: black coating on the beak, absence of scaly pattern, white cap, too long thin neck, narrow chest, penguin-like posture.
