Bargur — compact, medium-sized mountain breed of zebu cattle of dual purpose (milk + draft) from the Western Ghats (India). Height at withers: cows 110–125 cm, bulls 120–135 cm. Live weight: cows 280–380 kg, bulls 380–520 kg. Body length 130–155 cm. Head relatively light, elongated, with straight or slightly convex profile. Horns of medium size (25–55 cm), lyre-shaped, gray with dark tips. Ears of medium length (15–20 cm), horizontally set. Eyes large, dark brown or black. Neck of medium length, in bulls with hump 8–15 cm. Body compact, chest moderately wide (35–42 cm), deep (65–75 cm). Back straight or slightly raised, rump slightly sloping. Limbs strong, medium length, with very hard black hooves. Tail thin, long, with black tassel 25–35 cm. Coat short, smooth, tightly fitting. Main color dark red to cherry-brown (mahogany color) with characteristic white belt along the back from withers to tail; lower part of abdomen, thighs and lower third of legs often lighter or with white markings. Differs from other South Indian zebu by more compact build, smaller stature and pronounced white dorsal belt. Compactness index ≈ 1.05–1.15. Not allowed: absence of white belt, black or fawn color, drooping ears >22 cm, weak limbs.
