coal skink
Plestiodon anthracinus
The coal skink is a small lizard with smooth shiny scales and dark body coloration. It lives in moist forests of eastern North America and hides under fallen trees and stones.
The coal skink differs from other skinks by its almost uniformly dark coloration without stripes in adults. It is beneficial to the forest because it eats many insects and serves as prey for birds and snakes.
