balkan donkey
Балканский осёл (Βαλκανικός γάιδαρος)
Calm, hardy, stubborn if handled incorrectly, but loyal and affectionate with kind treatment. Well adapted to the mountain conditions of the Balkans, possesses a strong self-preservation instinct and resistance to extreme weather conditions.
Balkan donkey — one of the smallest and most compact European donkeys. Height at withers 90–110 cm, body length 140–165 cm, live weight 130–220 kg (average 160–190 kg). Build strong, harmonious, with short strong limbs, strong bone and well-developed musculature. Head relatively large, broad, with short blunt square muzzle and broad flat forehead. Ears medium length (190–240 mm), set vertically. Neck short, muscular. Body compact, barrel-shaped, back short, straight or slightly soft. Tail short (35–45 cm without hair) with brush 20–30 cm. Coat short, dense, coarse, with thick undercoat in winter. Allowed colors: dark gray (mouse), gray-brown, black, gray of various shades, reddish-brown — all with black "donkey cross" on the shoulders. White markings highly undesirable. Differs from the base type by smaller size, shorter ears, compact body and from large breeds — smaller size, square head, coarser coat.
