Lemmus portenkoi
Wrangel lemming is a small rodent that lives only on Wrangel Island in the Arctic Ocean. It is one of the northernmost mammals, well adapted to life in the cold tundra.
Wrangel lemming differs from other lemmings in that it is found only on one island and has some features of coloration and structure. It is important for nature because it serves as the main food for arctic foxes, polar owls, and other predators of the island.

Twice a year, the lemming changes its fur. Summer fur is shorter and darker, winter fur is thicker and lighter for better cold protection.
