ranchu
Ranchu (Carassius auratus var. ranchu)
Calm, peaceful, low-activity. Prefers slow swimming near the bottom and in the middle water layer. Social, gets along well with other calm goldfish breeds. Low aggression. Weakly expressed instinct to search for food in the water column due to body structure features.
Ranchu is one of the shortest-bodied and "thickest" breeds of goldfish. The body is ovoid, strongly compressed laterally, with a characteristic pronounced "hump" in the anterior part of the back. Body length 80–180 mm (ideal 120–150 mm), body height (including the "hump") 45–75 mm, weight 25–180 g (show specimens 60–110 g). The head is large, broad, square, with a strongly developed fleshy "hood" (wen) 8–18 mm high and 4–12 mm thick. Eyes small, round, 4–7 mm in diameter, dark brown or black. Mouth small, inferior. Body short, height 65–75 % of length, back with a steep "hump" immediately behind the head, then sharply descending. Caudal peduncle short and thick (12–22 mm). Tail double, fan-shaped or "butterfly", lobe length 25–45 mm, strictly vertical (90°). Dorsal fin completely absent. Pectoral fins 18–28 mm, pelvic fins short. Scales large, metallic or pearl type, shiny. Acceptable colors: red, white, black, yellow, red-white, tricolor (black+red+white), silver-white with red spots. Differs from the basic type and Lionhead by the complete absence of a dorsal fin, more pronounced hump, short thick body, vertical positioning of the double tail and less abundant wen. Ideal proportions: length:height ≈ 1.4–1.6 : 1, head length ≈ ⅓ of total length, caudal peduncle ≈ ⅕–⅙ of body length. Disqualifying faults: presence of dorsal fin, single or drooping tail, wen asymmetry, excessively long body, telescope eyes.
