The Steller's sea cow was a huge marine mammal weighing up to ten tons. It lived in cold waters near the Commander Islands and went extinct 27 years after discovery due to human hunting.
Steller's sea cow was the largest representative of sirenians and the only species that lived in cold water. It played an important role in controlling seaweed overgrowth. The species disappeared due to rapid extermination by humans, showing how easily the balance in nature can be disrupted.
