Mergellus albellus
The smew, or white-naped loon, is a small diving duck from the Anatidae family. Males have white plumage with black markings, while females are gray with white cheeks. The bird catches fish in rivers and lakes of northern forests.
The smew differs from other sawbills in its smaller body size and the special white coloration of the male. The bird is important for nature because it regulates the population of small fish in forest water bodies.
