The pygmy notothen is a small deep-sea fish up to 35 centimeters long. It lives in cold seas of the Southern Hemisphere at depths from 150 to 900 meters and hunts small animals.
The pygmy notothen differs from related codfish by its small size and life at great depths. It is important for the ocean food chain as a predator of small animals and prey for large fish.
Grabs prey with a wide mouth, navigating using vision and the lateral line.
Immature form that undergoes metamorphosis before adulthood.
