patagonia frog
Atelognathus patagonicus
The Patagonian frog lives only in a few cold lakes in southern Argentina. Some adult individuals retain gills and remain fully aquatic throughout their lives.
The Patagonian frog is distinguished by its ability to neoteny in cold lakes where transformation into a terrestrial form is impossible. It helps maintain balance in nutrient-poor water bodies by eating small animals.
