The Allipaca water frog, or Telmatobius intermedius, is an amphibian that spends its entire life in cold mountain streams of the Andes at an altitude of about four kilometers. It has loose skin that helps it breathe in water with low oxygen content.
The Allipaca water frog differs from related species by its strongly folded skin, which helps it survive in very cold water with low oxygen content. It is important as part of the food chain of mountain streams and serves as an indicator of the purity of high-mountain water bodies.
Immature form that undergoes metamorphosis before adulthood.
