serrated hinged terrapin
Pelusios sinuatus
The serrated hinged terrapin is a freshwater reptile from Africa. It has a movable hinge on the lower part of the carapace that allows it to tightly close its head, neck, and front legs from enemies.
The serrated hinged terrapin differs from related species by its strongly serrated rear edge of the carapace and a very mobile hinge on the plastron. It is important for nature because it regulates the population of small aquatic animals and serves as food for large predators.
