The Amazonian water frog, or Telmatobius atahualpai, is a fully aquatic amphibian from the Andes. It lives only in cold mountain rivers and streams in northern Peru and breathes mainly through its skin.
The species differs from related telmatobiuses by the shape of the muzzle and body coloration. It is important as a predator in mountain rivers and serves as an indicator of cold water purity. Currently, the population is sharply declining due to pollution and diseases.
Immature form that undergoes metamorphosis before adulthood.
