The Eastern mud salamander, or false triton, is an amphibian from the family of lungless salamanders. It lives in the eastern part of North America in damp places near streams, swamps, and mud springs.
The eastern mud salamander differs from related species by its bright reddish coloration and preference for muddy water bodies. It is important for nature because it eats harmful insects and serves as food for birds and snakes.
Immature form that undergoes metamorphosis before adulthood.
