The Jollyville Plateau salamander is a small salamander from the lungless family that lives only in clean springs and underground waters of the Jollyville plateau in Texas. It belongs to neotenic species: it retains external gills and larval appearance throughout its life and never transforms into an adult form without gills.
The Jollyville Plateau salamander differs from related species by its permanent neoteny and retention of external gills in the adult state. The species is very sensitive to water pollution and serves as an important biological indicator of the purity of underground springs.
Active search and capture of prey.
Immature form that undergoes metamorphosis before adulthood.
