domestic goose
Anser anser domesticus
Calm, vigilant, territorial. Bonds well with humans, shows a strong flocking instinct. Males are often aggressive during nesting and offspring protection periods. Loudly honk when strangers approach, serving as good “watchdogs.” Less fearful and more tame than the wild gray goose.
The domestic goose is significantly larger than the greylag goose (1.5–3 times in mass). Body length 750–1100 mm, wingspan 1500–1900 mm. Head large, massive, often with a knob at the base of the beak (in Chinese and African breeds). Beak 55–85 mm, straight or slightly convex. Neck long (280–450 mm), powerful, with a dewlap in heavy breeds. Body deep, broad, barrel-shaped in meat breeds. Wings 380–520 mm, relatively short, most birds do not fly. Legs with tarsus length 90–130 mm, with well-developed webs. Tail 140–190 mm, broad, raised. Plumage dense with abundant down. Main colorations: white, gray (wild type with scaly pattern), pied, bean goose type, brown. Acceptable proportions: body length 1.6–2.0 times neck length, breast width ≥45% of body length. Not acceptable: narrow build, absence of dewlap in obligatory breeds, black beak and legs in white European breeds.
