Mordacia praecox is a non-parasitic lamprey that lives in the rivers of southeastern Australia. The larvae spend several years in the bottom silt, and the adults do not feed at all and exist only for reproduction.
Mordacia praecox differs from parasitic lampreys in that the adults do not attach to fish and do not drink blood. The species is important as part of the food chain in rivers and as an indicator of water purity.
homogamy, reproduction always with fertilization, no alternation of generations
Immature form that undergoes metamorphosis before adulthood.
