Megalochelys atlas was a giant land tortoise that lived in South Asia during the Pleistocene. The shell length of an adult reached two meters, and its body mass exceeded one ton.
Megalochelys atlas was distinguished by its enormous size, which helped it defend against predators and live a long life. It dispersed plant seeds and was an important part of ancient Asian ecosystems.
