The common shovelnose is a small fish from the sturgeon family. It has a flat shovel-shaped snout with which it digs in the sand on the bottom of rivers in North America.
The common shovelnose differs from other sturgeons in its small body size and greatly expanded shovel-shaped snout. It helps maintain the cleanliness of river bottoms by eating small invertebrates and serves as food for large predatory fish.
Immature form that undergoes metamorphosis before adulthood.
