Hungarian Water Buffalo
Hungarian Water Buffalo
Calm, balanced, less aggressive compared to its wild ancestor. Gets along well in a herd, shows a strong maternal instinct. Adapted to life in the temperate climate of Central Europe.
Hungarian water buffalo — a specialized European breeding line of the domesticated Asian water buffalo. Large, powerful, relatively dry and athletic build compared to Indian and Italian dairy lines. Height at withers: 135–155 cm (bulls), 125–145 cm (cows). Live weight: bulls 650–950 kg (average 780–850 kg), cows 550–750 kg (average 620–680 kg). Body length 2100–2600 mm. Massive, but relatively narrow and elongated head. Straight or slightly raised back in the lumbar region. Powerful neck with dewlap. Strong limbs. The official standard provides only a solid slate-black or very dark gray coat. A small amount of white hair on the lower part of the tail, the coronary band of the hooves, and a star on the forehead is allowed. Characterized by powerful, widely spaced horns forming an almost perfect semicircle in profile, with a thickened base.
