Ethmalosa fimbriata
The bonga is a fish from the herring family. It lives in coastal waters and estuaries of West Africa and is of great importance for local fisheries.
The bonga differs from related herrings by its very long gill rakers, which allow it to feed efficiently on plankton. It is important for the ecosystems of West African estuaries as a link between plankton and larger predators, as well as the main target of commercial fishing.
