gulf ridley
Lepidochelys kempii
The Atlantic ridley is the smallest sea turtle on Earth. It lives in the coastal waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean and is famous for thousands of females simultaneously emerging to lay eggs on one beach.
The Atlantic ridley differs from other sea turtles by its small size, heart-shaped shell and habit of mass egg-laying. It is important for nature because it controls the number of crabs and other invertebrates on the sea floor. The species is very rare and is threatened with extinction.
