Alosa macedonica
Macedonian shad, or Alosa macedonica, is a small freshwater fish from the herring family. It lives only in one lake in northern Greece and is not found anywhere else.
The Macedonian shad differs from marine shads in that it spends its entire life in a freshwater lake and does not migrate to the sea. It is important as part of the food chain of Lake Volvi and as a rare species that helps scientists understand changes in nature.
