Lake Lerma salamande
Ambystoma lermaense
The Lerma salamander lives only in Lake Lerma and associated canals in central Mexico. This amphibian retains gills and an aquatic form throughout its life.
The Lerma salamander differs from other salamanders in that it never loses its gills and never comes onto land. It is important to nature as part of Mexico's freshwater ecosystem and helps scientists study animal development.
