northern brook lamprey
Ichthyomyzon fossor
The Northern Brook Lamprey is a small freshwater fish without jaws. It lives in streams of North America, spends most of its life as a larva in the soil, and does not feed in the adult stage.
Unlike parasitic lampreys, the northern brook lamprey does not attack fish or drink their blood. It is important for nature because its larvae clean the water of small particles, and the entire lamprey serves as food for birds and predatory fish.
