Sebastopol Goose
Calm, friendly, less aggressive than many other goose breeds. Gets along well with other birds and people. Has a pronounced brooding instinct. Less noisy than the gray goose.
Sebastopol Goose — medium-sized decorative breed of domestic geese, bred from the gray goose (Anser anser). Distinguished by compact rounded body conformation, relatively short neck, small head and, above all, strongly modified curly (lock) plumage over the entire body. Live weight: ganders 5.0–7.0 kg (ideal 5.4–6.3 kg), geese 4.0–6.0 kg (ideal 4.5–5.4 kg). Body length 700–900 mm, wingspan 1400–1700 mm. Body carriage slightly elevated, almost horizontal. Head rounded-oval (length 90–110 mm), beak short orange (55–68 mm), neck of medium length (280–380 mm) with S-shaped curve. Eyes bluish-gray or light blue. Main distinguishing feature — strongly elongated, soft, silky feathers twisted into spirals and curls (especially on neck, breast, back, sides, wings and tail). Wings short (380–460 mm), often unsuitable for flight. Tail short, high-set, forming a lush “pompon” of curls (feather length 120–180 mm). Legs orange, shank 85–105 mm. Acceptable colors: predominantly white (White), gray/pied (Gray/Pied), buff/cream. Maximum curliness and pure white color are valued. Differs from the wild gray goose by smaller size, blue eyes, curly plumage and loss of ability for sustained flight. Standards: APA (since 1938), British Waterfowl Standards, Entente Européenne. Disqualifying defects: straight plumage (“slick”), black/gray beak, dark brown eyes, absence of orange on legs and beak.
