craonnais pig
Craonnais pig (Porc Craonnais)
Calm, balanced, less aggressive than many modern meat breeds. Well adapts to pasture keeping, shows strong foraging instincts and searching for food in the soil. Social, but can be territorial towards unfamiliar animals.
Craonnais — medium-sized meat breed of pigs of French origin. Adult sows: weight 220–280 kg, height at withers 65–72 cm. Boars: weight 280–360 kg, height at withers 70–78 cm. Body length in adults: 1100–1350 mm. Build strong, compact, slightly elongated, with well-developed musculature and moderate subcutaneous fat layer. Elongation index: 145–155 %. Chest depth ≥85 % of height at withers. Chest width behind the shoulder blades ≥38 % of body length. Head of medium size, relatively light, slightly elongated, profile straight or slightly concave. Ears 180–240 mm, set horizontally or slightly inclined forward. Snout 140–170 mm. Neck short, powerful. Back straight or with a slight dip, wide (380–450 mm). Chest depth 550–620 mm. Legs of medium length, elbow height 380–430 mm. Tail 300–420 mm, with a tassel. Skin light pink. Bristle 25–45 mm, medium density, coarse. Color predominantly white, white-black spotted allowed; completely black undesirable. Differs from wild boars by larger size, light head, absence of undercoat and meaty conformation; from Gascon and Limousin — by lighter head, horizontal ears, predominance of white color and compact body.
