The tidepool sculpin, or Oligocottus maculosus, is a small marine fish up to 9 centimeters long. It lives in tide pools on rocky shores of the Pacific Ocean and can breathe air out of water for several hours.
The tidepool sculpin differs from other fish by its ability to stay out of water for a long time and change its body color to camouflage against surrounding rocks and algae. It plays an important role in controlling the population of small invertebrates in the intertidal zone.
Immature form that undergoes metamorphosis before adulthood.
