Gila nigra
The head chub, or Gila nigra, is a small freshwater fish of the carp family. It lives in the headwaters of small rivers and streams in the southwestern United States.
The head chub differs from other members of the Gila genus by its darker, almost black coloration and preference for the uppermost sections of streams with clean water. It serves as an important part of the food chain in mountain rivers and helps scientists monitor the condition of water bodies.
Collects food with its mouth from the bottom, from stones, and from the water column.
