Orestias cuvieri is a small freshwater fish from the goodeid family. It lives only in cold high-altitude lakes and rivers of the Andes at an altitude of about 4000 meters.
Orestias cuvieri differs from related species by its small size and adaptation to very cold highland water. It serves as an important part of the food chain in the Altiplano lakes, eating small animals and becoming prey for birds.
Captures prey with its mouth during swimming in the water column.
Immature form that undergoes metamorphosis before adulthood.
