spotted sandpiper
Actitis macularius
The spotted sandpiper is a small bird with long legs and a thin beak. It lives near rivers, lakes, and streams in North America and constantly wags its tail while walking.
The spotted sandpiper differs from other plovers in that the roles of males and females are reversed: females choose partners, and males raise the chicks. The bird helps maintain the balance of insects near water bodies.
Runs fast along the shore, pecks prey from the surface of the soil or water.
