Murrah buffalo
Calm, obedient, less aggressive compared to the wild water buffalo. High sociability in the herd, good adaptability to managed housing. Weakly expressed instinct for territory protection.
Murrah is one of the largest and most massive dairy breeds of river buffaloes. Adult buffaloes: live weight 450–650 kg (average 520–580 kg), height at withers 130–145 cm, body length 160–180 cm. Breeding bulls: 650–850 kg (up to 950 kg), height at withers 140–160 cm. The build is strong, massive, with a deep, relatively elongated body and well-developed hind third. Stretch index (body length / height at withers) ≈ 1.25–1.35. Chest depth at least 65–68 % of height at withers. The most characteristic feature is short, very thick at the base, flat, spirally twisted back and up horns (“snail” or “spiral”). The head is large, massive, but relatively short, with a wide slightly convex forehead and a rhomboid depression between the eyes. Skin and coat: dominant color — deep black (jet black), coat very short, sparse, smooth. A small amount of white hair at the end of the tail and a white stocking on the lower part of the limbs is allowed. It differs from the wild water buffalo by significantly smaller horn size, more compact dairy build, completely black color and calm temperament.
