The common squirrel is a small rodent with bright red fur and a large bushy tail. It lives in trees in the forests of Europe and northern Asia and deftly jumps from branch to branch.
The common squirrel differs from the gray squirrel in smaller size, bright red color, and ear tufts. It is important for the forest because it spreads tree seeds and mushroom spores.
Searches for food on trees and on the ground, hides supplies in caches for winter.

The squirrel molts twice a year. In spring it changes its thick winter fur to a lighter summer one, and in autumn the opposite.
