Neochanna rekohua
Neochanna recurva, or Chatham mudfish, is a small freshwater fish that lives only on the Chatham Islands. It can burrow into the silt and survive long periods without water by reducing its metabolic activity.
The Chatham mudfish differs from other fish by its ability to live without water for several months in a burrow in the mud. It is important for the nature of the Chatham Islands as a predator of small invertebrates and as a rare species demonstrating adaptability to a changing environment.
